Modern farmhouse style decor is taking the interior design industry by storm. In such a fast paced world, full of new technology and the chaos of social media, people are embracing the feel of a more simple time. Modern farmhouse decor represents a slower pace and a simple time that is centered around family. Neutral tones and handmade accessories and textiles, paired with clean lines and industrial metals are the inspiration behind creating a farmhouse feel in your home.

Creating a modern farmhouse feel does not have to cost an arm and a leg. Because the overall feel of modern farmhouse is inspired by vintage and rustic items, you won’t have to fork over a ton of money to create the look you are going for. Luckily, you can find modern farmhouse decor on a budget.

Neutral Colors and Prints

When choosing curtains think “cozy”. You want to add warmth to your room through the texture in your curtains. Stick to neutral creams, tans or even a sage color. Modern farmhouse decor has a very warm feeling, but the warmth is not brought in through colors, it is brought in through the textures of the fabric in the space.

The inspiration behind modern farmhouse decor comes from actual farmhouses where things were handmade. I am not saying you should be sewing your own curtains but search for ones that look like they were handmade, like these linen curtains with a button

Don’t be afraid of patterns but remember that the overall feel should be neutral and organic. Stay away from bright or overall dark colors in order to achieve a light and airy feel. Black and white buffalo checked curtains are very popular right now. The bold pop of black adds a nice bold statement to the neutral feel of a farmhouse home.

Cozy Pillows and Blankets as Accessories

Remember that with a modern farmhouse feel you want to use textures to create a clean yet cozy feel. An easy inexpensive way to do that is through accessorizing with pillows and blankets. These changeable pillow cases are some of my favorite finds. Decorative pillows can be so darn expensive. I love these pillow cases because you can change them out with the seasons. In the fall I will change them out with some pumpkin themes and then around the holidays I will add in some Christmas themed, farmhouse style cases.

Bring the Outdoors In

When trying to find modern farmhouse decor on a budget, think about what you might already have. Wild flowers are a great way to add a farmhouse feel to your home instantly. If you don’t have access to a fresh field of wild flowers, as most of us don’t, go for real-looking silk flowers instead. Sure, it would be great to be able to buy flowers each week and fill our homes with fresh flowers but that is just not always in the budget.

Believe it or not, Dollar Tree has some great silk flowers that are perfect for a DIY floral arrangement. When choosing a vase, stick to mason jars, or other vintage canisters like aluminum cans or even old pitchers.

Greenery is also another great way to bring in a natural element to your farmhouse decor year-round. Stick to clean lines and tight arrangements like boxwood and eucalyptus.

What's Old is New

Because farmhouse decor has a vintage element to it, finding used items to decorate your home will help you to implement modern farmhouse decor on a budget. Hunt through your garage for old metal buckets, aluminum tins etc. Even better if you have a “junk collector” in the family that will let you rummage through some of their piles of stuff if you know what I mean.

My grandfather had a barn full of stuff he collected over the years. When we recently went through his barn to sell his property, I was amazed at how many wonderful treasures were in that space that he deemed “junk”.

The great thing about farmhouse is that if things look old and weathered that’s okay! Things should not look brand new. I absolutely love this vintage tin towel bar, the touches of rust really make it feel old and vintage.

When choosing modern farmhouse decor on a budget remember to stick to the basics. Fill your home with neutral colors and warm, natural textures. Get creative and find accessories in items you already have. Remember that “old looking” is okay and that you can find wonderful pieces for your home in the most unexpected places. Whether your goal is a full on farmhouse feel or you are just looking for ways to add modern touches of a simpler time, find things that you love and bring you joy.
